Being new to the printing process of book covers, I've learned that it can be a challenge to get graphics with the contrast and vibrancy you would expect. ReplyDeleteUvi, Back in 2004 when I was doing the cover for our audio book, I had to have a professional graphics company tweak the colors so that they would come out the way they looked on the monitor. It seems that blues and purples are good colors to avoid if going to print. I started having a full-size, sample cover of our books printed at FedEx-Kinko's, making sure that everything was CMYK, not RGB. So far, the covers have come out the way they looked on my test print.
ReplyDeleteThe reason the color appear different is because the print color space, CMYK, is smaller than the monitor color space, RGB. To get blue (B) in print, the algorithm has to proportion a certain amount of cyan (C) and magenta (M) and it isn't straight forward. For example, if you use equal amounts of C & M for B, the color appears to be a purplish blue--often referred to as printer's blue.

DeleteI ran into problems trying to add colored writing to a red cover. Eventually I gave up and made the writing black.

DeleteIt's a beautiful cover. I'm not an artist, but I think I know art when I see it. I love making covers and the rack cards I use to promote my books. I like a cover that is attractive to look at, and too busy. This is perfect. Good luck with the book. A cover like this should draw a lot of attention.
