Annie.
He’d dreamed of her like this many times over the years. Both before, and after, they’d come together one hot summer’s night in a fiery explosion of passion. Jared had a hard time explaining to himself why he’d run the next morning. Because that’s exactly what he’d done. At the time, he’d used the excuse of his mom’s refusal to support his decision to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the Navy—but that’s all it was, an excuse. The real reason he’d run was laying in this bed next to him right now.
Annie Campbell terrified him.
She was everything he’d always wanted, wrapped up in a delectable parcel labeled forever. And that had sent him running for the nearest plane. Because no matter how much he wanted her, he’d thought he wanted the Navy more. After living with what a decision like that had done to his own family, Jared swore never to place someone who loved him through the same torture. He’d had to stand by as a child and watch his mother age before his eyes every time the phone rang. And then, one day, it happened. Only instead of a call, it was the doorbell. Two smartly dressed naval officers stood on the doorstep; hat in hand, solemn looks on their faces, and as his mom broke down with heart-wrenching sobs, Jared knew his father would not be returning.
In the weeks and months that followed, a determination grew within him to find out for himself why his dad chose to risk his life overseas rather than stay home and care for his family. It became an obsession; coloring everything he did, from exercise to bringing his grades up in school. All done with the goal of entering the Navy, not realizing he was becoming the man he’d loved and hated with such passion.
Then he met Annie, and for a while he’d dared to dream. She was shy, withdrawn, a bookworm, whereas he took pleasure in being the class clown. The boy who made everyone laugh. Something about her drew him from the start. He’d often find himself staring at her, fantasizing about those soft, sweet curves. Wondering about the thoughts going on behind those gorgeous green eyes.

"This anthology consists of twelve wonderful stories with the inherent theme of love and war contained in them. Out of the twelve authors, Uvi Poznansky is the only one that I was familiar with previously. So, in addition to becoming acquainted with new authors in this set, my 'to be read' pile has grown considerably. That is not a bad thing with the wind chill of a minus 10 as I write this review!!"
Thank you for sharing one of my favorite scenes from The Rebel's Redemption, Uvi!
