delightful, great writing about the process of making paper

A short and sweet review for my children's book, Now I Am Paper:

This is a delightful, great writing about the process of making paper from trees from a child's point of view.

Promise to call if anything changes

Some people needed the city.
He needed the sand. The water.
“A steady lay?”
He chuckled. “Don’t be a brat, Darcy. I don’t tell you how to live your romantic life. Stay out of mine.”
“I have one. You don’t.”
“Out.” He shook his head, even though she couldn’t see.
“Fine.” She paused. “Hey, Dax?”
“Yeah?”
“Is Dad going to get better?”
It hurt to hear the question, knowing how he had to answer. “He looks great. You just caught him in a bad moment, Darcy.”  Dave Smith was dying. If not by Christmas, then the beginning of the year, according to the professionals in the white coats.
“Promise to call if anything changes.”
“Cross my heart.”

Electric candles shined through the glum of the day

They lived fifteen miles from each other. Although Anna offered to drive the distance to make it easier on Harley, Harley was looking forward to an adventure, so they arranged to meet at an inn that was about half way for both women. The inn was quaint, off a gravel road which wound around a revolutionary war battlefield dotted with headstones. Built of gray stone, black shutters adorned the windows. Coming closer to the inn, Harley’s heart sank; they’d decorated for Christmas already and she knew it would be emotional for her. Electric candles shined through the glum of the day, pine roping secured with red velvet ribbon encircled the porch railing. The beauty of it, quintessential Philadelphia, brought tears to her eyes.
“It’s after Thanksgiving. Pull it together, girlfriend,” she uttered. “You’re making memories with Jason’s possible wife.”
Peeking in the rearview mirror, she was satisfied that nothing more could be done for her appearance. “I’m a sick woman. What do you expect?” Makeup tended to sit on the surface of her skin like paint, so she applied only lip-gloss and eyeliner, just a small amount of eyebrow pencil. The pallor of her skin was like a death mask. Pulling her collar up as far as it would go and her stocking cap, knitted by Tina, down to her painted on eyebrows, she decided it was as good as it got.

Doing the happy dance! Dancing with Air

Doing the happy dance! The audiobook edition of my novel, Dancing with air, has just been released!

I'd like to share with you the marvel of listening to my gifted narrator, Don Warrick. He gives voice to a young, adventurous marine, to his beautiful girlfriend, to her overbearing Mama, and to a host of other characters, painting the contrasts that heighten the drama in this novel. Don's talent is more than living in the skin of each character--it is getting to the core of each character, to the innermost fears and aspirations.

Howling, he broke the surface from underneath the water

Sliding open the door, Murphy slipped outside onto the deck from the master suite, and made his way quickly down the long wooden staircase.
Reaching the lower level, he strolled along the wooden planks of the pier. Grinning, he slipped off his shorts. Taking in a deep breath, he dove from the end of the pier.
Howling, he broke the surface from underneath the water. “Damn – that water’s cold!”
Kate grinned, skimming the water. “Good morning.” With long smooth strokes, she swam over to greet him.
Meeting her half-way, Murphy gathered her into his arms. Taking her completely unawares, he gave her a long blistering kiss.
“What a fantastic way of waking up in the morning,” he finally said.
“It is a little cold, though.”
“Bracing,” he answered, as his eyes met hers.
She smiled.

Resting on the multitude of pillows

Between the affection, hugs and womanly discourses, Anne flourished. Not one to push herself forward, it took longer for her relax at school, but eventually a young girl living on the nearest farm approached her with friendship and they became inseparable.
Later, they sent Christmas e-mails, but their differing lifestyles interfered, and they eventually lost touch. For a second, Anne wondered if Denise was still in Walsh Creek, or if she and her husband Marty, Clint’s one-time best friend, had moved on.
Once under the covers, snuggled between her silken sheets, and resting on the multitude of pillows she loved to pile around her; Anne let the reminiscences of the best, and worst, night of her life flood into her mind. It had been years since she’d allowed this indulgence. These remembrances always left her in tears, and wrought with pain that took weeks to shake. Therefore, she’d weaned herself off them by pure force of will. Not to mention the sleeping pills, when the persistent memories had refused to be blocked.
