The general takes a sniff of the wine

Having uncorked one of the bottles, the general takes a sniff of the wine, and relaxes into his seat.
So I decide that this is the best time to test him, and test my own thinking, too, on a more personal note.
So I say, “I hear you’re having an affair with Saul’s concubine, Ritzpah.”
“Yes,” Abner says, with an acid tone, which he intends to wash away with a drink. “And what a delight that is.”
“So, just like me,” I say, as if to confide in him, “you must have discovered one thing: taking a woman that belongs to another is a temptation unto itself.”
“I assure you, it’s more trouble than it’s worth,” he says, already uncorking the next bottle.
“Really?” I ask. “It is?”
“Because of her I must now leave a steady position with my master, and defect to you. Oh trust me, I appreciate the opportunity, I do! But an affair with another man’s wife? I would never do that again—unless, of course, it’s a way to gain something else, such as political power.”
I go on to ask, “So, if she were a regular wife, I mean, the wife of a regular soldier, and could offer no political gain—none whatsoever—would you start an affair with her?”
“No,” he says, firmly, and again he spits. “Never.”
“Not even if you were in love?”
“Love?” he echoes, as if this were some foreign, Babylonian word, written in hieroglyphs onto a brittle papyrus scroll, by our neighbors south of the border, the Egyptians, and read out with a twist, in the heavy, indecipherable accent of our neighbors north of the border, the Hittites.
Abner may be right. For a simple word, it packs a complex emotion.
“Yes,” I say. “Love.”
He claps his hand on the table, and the empty bottles start bouncing about. “Hell, what does that have to do with anything?”

An excellent collection from some of the brightest writers today

Dennis Waller, filmmaker and author of several books, is recognized as an expert on spiritual experience, self-discovery, and exploring the human consciousness. He is also a Top 500 Amazon Reviewer, which is an amazing rank. I am honored that he posted this review for the new multi-author boxed set, At Odds with Destiny:

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a tremendous box set of works from some of my favorite authors, Uvi Poznansky, Christoph Fischer, Brandt Legg, and Janet Morris. There is a massive amount of reading here, with 10 novels, it will take some time to finish this box set and for the price, it's a give-away.

Rise To Power by Uvi Poznansky is a sensational novel matched only by The Luck of the Weissensteiners by Christoph Fischer and Outview by Brandt Legg. Tempus by Janet Morris is a great one too. The variety here is phenomenal, from intrigue and mystery, to gut wrenching, to fantasy, one thing is consistent, the quality.

Overall, "At Odds with Destiny" is an incredible value and that should be on everybody's Kindle. An excellent collection from some of the brightest writers today that can't be missed.

The awakening of your senses as well as your appetite

Lately, despite being an intensely private person, I have found myself increasingly engaged with readers and listeners. Why? because of my characters. Having sprung from my mind onto the page, they might die there, pressed between the front and back covers–unless I make it possible for them to spring from the page to your mind.
I thrive on reaching out to my audience. Every day I discover new ways to create this connection and strengthen it. By far the best way is forging alliances with other authors, whose work is of outstanding quality and whose audience appreciates creativity. To this end I review fellow authors on my blog, which is my way of recognizing their talent. I organize author events on Facebook to showcase our work. I read a lot of novels, note their reviews, and actively seek out book recommendations, all of which allows me to choose the best and the brightest for the most ambitious team project I created to date: a boxed set titled At Odds with Destiny.
My vision for this project is to bring together four authors and offer you a selection of great novels that cross boundaries in terms of genre. I am so glad that put together, our stories invite you to explore. And so–whether you are a young adult or young at heart, whether you enjoy the thrill of adventure or the immersion into the character’s stream of conscience, and whether you want to be swept away to distant times and places or to see contemporary settings with sharper clarity–you will find a story here to your liking, and then some! This project is meant to celebrate excellence in writing.
At Odds with Destiny is like an assortment of chocolates. Relish the work of the author you enjoy, and then taste new, unfamiliar flavors. The more you take in, the more you’ll feel the awakening of your senses as well as your appetite.
