Now, a big commotion breaks out. The nurse gasps, cries, threatens, which makes the dog leap off my pillow, his tail tickling my nose with a feathery touch, which in a blink, makes me itch to sneeze.
“Damn animal!” she screams, while chasing him under, over, and around my bed.
I won’t be the least bit surprised if some of the life-support instruments get unplugged in the process, or if their wires get all tangled up, all for the better good of catching the beast.
I open half an eye—which takes a lot out of me—just to see if everything is still in place. No one pays attention to me except for Browny. Pa chuckles, then joins the nurse in hot pursuit. There is a thump against the floor with every step she makes. Then the air seems to shriek as she throws herself at the dog. Somehow, she ends up being pushed onto the bed, by accident of course.
When at long last, Dad manages to get hold of the leash, I let my eye fall shut. I feel exhausted. Browny is led away, yapping miserably all the way down the corridor. Woof.
